5 Ways to Honour Black History Month this Year

With Black History Month right around the corner, Score Promotions has put together a list of five ways you can honour Black History in 2022. There are many ways that you can commemorate the month and celebrate Black heroes within your community; shopping at black-owned businesses, donating to charities supporting anti-racism efforts and watching educational documentaries are just a few ways to do so. Here are five ways you can celebrate Black history — not just this month, but all year round.

1. Support Black Owned Businesses

On top of the overarching weight of the pandemic impacting Canadian businesses, it was reported that there is a significant gap in funding and mentorship when it comes to black owned businesses across the Country. Supporting your local businesses instead of retail giants is a significant way to positively impact your community. Not only does it benefit business owners, it benefits your neighborhood morale, the economy, the promotion of locally sourced goods, among many other positives.

2. Leave Room for Education

There are countless ways to incorporate education into your everyday life, whether it be at home or in the office. Learn about notable public figures, watch recommended documentaries, read about black history - from black authors! In a time where information is at our fingertips, it has never been easier to access the necessary information.

3. Pass the Mic

Pass the mic to members of the black community when discussing black history. Feature a black owned business on your page, host an online learning seminar and invite a member of the black community to run it. The purpose is not to speak for others, but to amplify their message.

4. Research the History of Where You Live

Do your own research here. A large portion of understanding and practicing anti-racist culture and actions is acknowledging and understanding where it stems from. For Score Promotions, that means turning to our Toronto community. We have been working alongside multiple black owned businesses to better understand how to incorporate diversity and inclusion into the promotional marketing space, and we encourage anyone reading this to assess how they can do similar work.

5. Support Local Organizations

Whether it be monetarily or not, there are tons of resources to support black owned charities, causes, and businesses all around us. Volunteer at an organization, donate goods or products to local charities, donate money to an online petition in your area. Continue to push towards equality and justice in your community.
